What is a speech disorder?


A speech disorder is when a person has issues surrounding making the sounds needed present to communicate. (Ex. stuttering)


How are they caused?


There are many ways speech disorders can be caused by. One of the ways they are caused is by the structure of shapes and bones not functioning properly. Another way it can be caused is by diseases or certain developmental disorders such as autism.


What are the different kinds of speech disorders?


There are endless kinds of speech disorders but the 4 most common include

  • stuttering ~"characterized by repetition of sounds, syllables, or words; prolongation of sounds; "

  • childhood apraxia speech ~ "difficulty making accurate movements when speaking"

  • orofacial myofunctional disorder ~ affecting oral facial structure

  • aphasia ~ "loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage."


What are the most common misconceptions about speech disorders?

  • people will grow out of them

  • therapy won't help

  • only kids should have speech therapy
