What is Autism: Misconceptions About This Disorder!

Updated: Apr 15, 2021

April 2nd is autism awareness day and this week is autism awareness week. So in honor of that I decided to make a blog about Autism!

What actually is Autism?

There are a lot of nasty stereotypes about Autism. A lot of people assume people that have autism only act one way, which is completely false. Autism just like any other disorder doesn’t have a one size fits all. But what actually is Autism? Well it is a developmental disorder which involves a bunch of conditions involving communication, social skills, and behavioral problems.

Where does Autism come from?

Autism comes from genetics mainly but it can also come from environmental influences.

Symptoms

A lot of autism studies in the past haven’t included women/girls so these symptoms may be more geared towards men/boys. While some of the symptoms between girls and boys may be similar they are still ultimately different in a lot of ways. With that being said here are all the symptoms.

-Sensitive to loud noises

-Likes to be alone

-Difficulty making friends or keeping friends

-Quiet

-Small range of interest but super important or intense focus on the specific interest

-Can be nonverbal or abnormal body language body posture or eye contact to little or to much

-Not interested in people

-Like to make very specific routines but not flexible about them

-Difficulty with transitions

Misconceptions

There are SO MANY misconceptions it honestly makes me super sad because a lot of the misconceptions are very offensive. The first misconception is autism is that people who have autism are easy to diagnose while, for guys it's easier to diagnose in general diagnosing autism can be hard and some people don’t get diagnosed until in their 20s or later! The next misconception is only children have autism. I don’t know how that would work lol, considering you can’t just grow out of a disorder, but yes that one is completely false. Adults have autism just as well. The last misconception is autism is a mental disorder. So autism is actually a developmental disorder meaning people who have it there brain is physically different from a neurotypical.
