Why Do We Conform?: The Psychology Behind Conformity

What is considered conformity?

Conformity is a way of changing people's beliefs or behaviors to fit in with a group. This involves peer pressure of social norms, expectations, and just group pressure.

Why do we conform?

There are lots of reasons to why we conform to society's standards. But to sum it up a lot of us naturally conform to avoid consequences. There could be a lot of "consequences" for example getting judged, life can be less predictable, we might not understands the actions of others as much, and avoiding looking unintelligent.

Is conforming harmful?

So, is conforming harmful? Well as most things in life there isn't one single answer. Conforming can be really good in certain circumstances it can make life more predictable and help us understand certain social signals. But.... on the contrary conformity can be very harmful. If we all we did in life was conform we would never think for ourselves. So, why would that be harmful? It would be harmful because when you aren't thinking for yourself you can be easily manipulated and not think past the simplicity in life.
